तत् समाकुल सम्भ्रान्तम् मत्त सम्कुपित द्विपम् ।
हय शिन्जित निर्घोषम् पुरम् आसीन् महा स्वनम् ॥ ॥२-४०-१९॥
tat samākula sambhrāntam matta samkupita dvipam |
haya śinjita nirghoṣam puram āsīn mahā svanam ॥2-40-19॥
Translation
The city became filled with agitation and confusion; elephants were intoxicated and furious, horses neighed loudly, and a tumultuous noise arose.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय पूरे नगर में खलबली मच गई। हाथी पागल होकर चिंघाड़ने लगे, घोड़े हिनहिनाने लगे, और चारों ओर महान कोलाहल व्याप्त हो गया।
English Commentary
The chaos escalates. The grief of the people reflects in the animals. Elephants become matta samkupita (furious/crazed) and horses neigh violently. The phrase maha svanam (great sound/roar) describes the cacophony of grief. It conveys that the order (Dharma) that Rama upheld is unraveling with his departure, leading to confusion and unrest across all living beings in the capital.
हिंदी टीका
राम के वियोग का प्रभाव केवल मनुष्यों तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि पशु-पक्षी भी व्याकुल हैं। 'समाकुल सम्भ्रान्तम्' (पूर्णतः व्याकुल और भ्रमित) नगर की स्थिति है। हाथियों का क्रोधित होना और घोड़ों का हिनहिनाना अपशकुन और प्रकृति के विरोध को दर्शाता है। वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ 'प्रकृति के मानवीकरण' (Pathetic Fallacy) का उपयोग कर रहे हैं—मानो पूरी अयोध्या चीत्कार कर रही हो।
