ततः सबाल वृद्धा सा पुरी परम पीडिता ।
रामम् एव अभिदुद्राव घर्म आर्तः सलिलम् यथा ॥ ॥२-४०-२०॥
tataḥ sabāla vṛddhā sā purī parama pīḍitā |
rāmam eva abhidudrāva gharma ārtaḥ salilam yathā ॥2-40-20॥
Translation
Then, the entire city, including children and the elderly, in extreme distress, ran after Rama just as people tormented by heat run towards water.

तब बच्चों और बूढ़ों सहित वह पूरी अत्यंत पीड़ित नगरी राम के पीछे वैसे ही दौड़ी, जैसे गर्मी से व्याकुल लोग पानी की ओर दौड़ते हैं।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a powerful simile here: gharma artah salilam yatha (like heat-struck people rushing to water). Rama is the life-giving water for Ayodhya. The inclusion of sabala vriddha (children and the elderly) emphasizes that this is a total mobilization of the populace driven by desperation. They are physically running after the chariot, unable to accept the separation, highlighting Rama's role as the soul of the kingdom.

यह एक अत्यंत मार्मिक उपमा है। राम अयोध्या के लिए 'जल' के समान हैं और उनका वियोग 'भीषण गर्मी' (घर्म) के समान। 'सबाल वृद्धा' (बच्चे और बूढ़े) भी दौड़ रहे हैं, जो राम के प्रति उनके अगाध प्रेम को दिखाता है। वे अपनी शारीरिक सीमाओं को भूलकर रथ के पीछे भाग रहे हैं। यह भक्ति और प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा है जहाँ प्रजा अपने राजा को खोना नहीं चाहती।
