Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तम् च अपि समनुज्ञाप्य धर्मज्ञः सीतया सह ।
राघवः शोक सम्मूढो जननीम् अभ्यवादयत् ॥ ॥२-४०-२॥
tam ca api samanujñāpya dharmajñaḥ sītayā saha |
rāghavaḥ śoka sammūḍho jananīm abhyavādayat ॥2-40-2॥
Translation
Having taken leave of the King, the righteous Rama, accompanied by Sita, though bewildered by grief, saluted his mother Kausalya.

पिता से अनुमति लेकर, धर्म के ज्ञाता राम ने सीता के साथ, शोक से व्याकुल होते हुए भी माता कौशल्या को प्रणाम किया।
English Commentary
Rama is referred to here as dharmajña (knower of righteousness). Even while being shoka sammudha (stupefied by grief), he does not forget the protocol of taking leave from his mother, Queen Kausalya, after the father. This juxtaposition of intense emotional turmoil and unwavering adherence to duty defines Rama's character. He models how one must maintain composure and respect toward elders even when one's own world is falling apart.
