पार्श्वतः पृष्ठतः च अपि लम्बमानाः तत् उन्मुखाः ।
बाष्प पूर्ण मुखाः सर्वे तम् ऊचुर् भृश दुह्खिताः ॥ ॥२-४०-२१॥
pārśvataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ ca api lambamānāḥ tat unmukhāḥ |
bāṣpa pūrṇa mukhāḥ sarve tam ūcur bhṛśa duhkhiḥtāḥ ॥2-40-21॥
Translation
Clinging to the sides and the rear (of the chariot), looking up at him with faces bathed in tears, they all spoke to him (and the charioteer) in deep sorrow.
हिंदी अनुवाद
रथ के बगल में और पीछे लटकते हुए, राम की ओर मुख किए हुए, आंसुओं से भरे चेहरे वाले वे सभी लोग अत्यंत दुखी होकर उनसे (और सुमन्त्र से) कहने लगे।
English Commentary
The imagery is visceral. Citizens are literally hanging (lambamanah) onto the moving chariot's sides and back, trying to physically impede its progress. Their faces are washed in tears (bashpa purna). It captures the raw emotional panic of the crowd. They are not just observers; they are active participants in the tragedy, desperately trying to hold onto their beloved prince one last time.

दृश्य की तीव्रता देखिए—लोग चलते हुए रथ को पकड़ रहे हैं, उसके किनारों पर लटक रहे हैं ('लम्बमानाः')। उनकी आँखों में आंसू हैं ('बाष्प पूर्ण मुखाः')। वे राम को जाने नहीं देना चाहते। यह प्रजातंत्र का वह स्वरूप है जहाँ राजा केवल शासक नहीं, बल्कि परिवार का प्रिय सदस्य है। उनका दुःख मूक नहीं है, वे विलाप करते हुए रथ को रोकने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।
