सम्यच्च वाजिनाम् रश्मीन् सूत याहि शनैः शनैः ।
मुखम् द्रक्ष्यामि रामस्य दुर्दर्शम् नो भविष्यति ॥ ॥२-४०-२२॥
samyacca vājinām raśmīn sūta yāhi śanaiḥ śanaiḥ |
mukham drakṣyāmi rāmasya durdarśam no bhaviṣyati ॥2-40-22॥
Translation
"Rein in the horses! O Charioteer, go slowly, go slowly! Let us look at Rama's face, for it will become difficult for us to see him hereafter."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वे चिल्लाए) "हे सारथी! घोड़ों की लगाम को कसो (रोको)। धीरे-धीरे चलो! हम राम का मुख देख लें, क्योंकि इसके बाद (14 वर्षों तक) हमारे लिए उनका दर्शन दुर्लभ हो जाएगा।"
English Commentary
The crowd pleads with Sumantra to pull the reins (samyacca rashmin) and drive shanaih shanaih (slowly, slowly). This repetition creates a rhythmic pathos. They realize the inevitability of the exile, so they bargain for just a few more moments of sight. The phrase durdarsham (rare/hard to see) acknowledges the long separation ahead. It is a heart-wrenching plea to freeze time.

प्रजा सुमन्त्र से विनती कर रही है—'शनैः शनैः' (धीरे-धीरे)। वे जानते हैं कि वे राम को रोक नहीं सकते, इसलिए वे केवल दर्शन का सुख कुछ क्षण और भोगना चाहते हैं। 'दुर्दर्शम्' (देखने में कठिन/दुर्लभ) शब्द भविष्य की अनिश्चितता और विरह की वेदना को प्रकट करता है। यह प्रेम की विवशता है—वे जाने से रोक नहीं सकते, बस विदाई को लम्बा खींचना चाहते हैं।
