आयसम् हृदयम् नूनम् राम मातुर् असम्शयम् ।
यद् देव गर्भ प्रतिमे वनम् याति न भिद्यते ॥ ॥२-४०-२३॥
āyasam hṛdayam nūnam rāma mātur asamśayam |
yad deva garbha pratime vanam yāti na bhidyate ॥2-40-23॥
Translation
"Undoubtedly, the heart of Rama's mother (Kausalya) is surely made of iron; since it does not break even when her god-like son is going to the forest."

"निश्चय ही राम की माता (कौशल्या) का हृदय लोहे का बना है, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं; जो देवतुल्य पुत्र के वन जाने पर भी नहीं फट रहा है।"
English Commentary
The citizens comment on the resilience of Queen Kausalya. They exclaim that her heart must be ayasam (made of iron) to withstand such trauma without shattering (na bhidyate). While some interpretations suggest this refers to Kaikeyi's cruelty, the context of the heart "not breaking" usually refers to the sufferer (Kausalya) surviving the grief. It underscores the magnitude of the tragedy—that staying alive after such a loss feels unnatural.

यहाँ प्रजाजन माता कौशल्या की वेदना की गहराई का अनुमान लगा रहे हैं। वे आश्चर्यचकित हैं कि पुत्र वियोग के इतने बड़े आघात से कौशल्या का हृदय फट क्यों नहीं गया। 'आयसम्' (लोहे का) शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ कठोरता के लिए नहीं, बल्कि आघात सहने की अमानवीय क्षमता के लिए किया गया है। 'देव गर्भ प्रतिमे' का अर्थ है देवताओं के समान सुंदर और गुणवान पुत्र।
