Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् वदन्तः ते सोढुम् न शेकुर् बाष्पम् आगतम् ।
अथ राजा वृतः स्त्रीभिर् दीनाभिर् दीन चेतनः ॥ ॥२-४०-२७॥
evam vadantaḥ te soḍhum na śekur bāṣpam āgatam |
atha rājā vṛtaḥ strībhir dīnābhir dīna cetanaḥ ॥2-40-27॥
Translation
Speaking thus, they could not hold back their welling tears. Meanwhile, the King, distraught in mind and surrounded by distressed women, (came out).
हिंदी अनुवाद
ऐसा कहते हुए वे (नागरिक) अपने उमड़ते हुए आंसुओं को रोक न सके। उधर, राजा दशरथ, जिनका मन अत्यंत दुखी था, दीन-दुखी रानियों से घिरे हुए (महल से बाहर आए)।
English Commentary
The emotional dam bursts for the citizens as they openly weep (bashpam agatam). The scene shifts to King Dasharatha, described as dina cetanah (miserable minded). Surrounded by weeping queens (stribhir dinabhir), the King represents the epicenter of the tragedy. The collective grief creates a suffocating atmosphere both inside and outside the palace.

दृश्य अब सड़क से पुनः राजमहल के द्वार की ओर मुड़ता है। एक तरफ प्रजा रो रही है, दूसरी तरफ राजा दशरथ अपनी सुध-बुध खोकर बाहर निकल रहे हैं। 'दीनाभिर्' विशेषण रानियों के लिए और 'दीन चेतनः' राजा के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है, जो यह बताता है कि राजमहल अब 'शोक भवन' बन चुका है। राजा का रानियों से घिरा होना उनकी असहायता को दर्शाता है।
