पिता च राजा काकुत्स्थः श्रीमान् सन्नः तदा बभौ ।
परिपूर्णः शशी काले ग्रहेण उपप्लुतः यथा ॥ ॥२-४०-३०॥
pitā ca rājā kākutsthaḥ śrīmān sannaḥ tadā babhau |
paripūrṇaḥ śaśī kāle graheṇa upaplutaḥ yathā ॥2-40-30॥
Translation
At that time, the glorious King and father, descendant of Kakutstha, appeared drained (of luster), like the full moon eclipsed by a planet (Rahu) at the appointed time.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय, पिता और राजा श्रीमान दशरथ (काकुत्स्थ) ऐसे निस्तेज प्रतीत हुए, जैसे ग्रहण के समय राहु द्वारा ग्रसित पूर्णिमा का चन्द्रमा हो।
English Commentary
Dasharatha is compared to a Paripurna Shashi (full moon) under eclipse (grahena upaplutah). Just as an eclipse casts a shadow over the brightest moon, grief has cast a shadow over the glorious King. The juxtaposition of his titles (Shriman, Kakutstha) with his current state highlights the tragic fall of a mighty monarch due to the twist of fate.

दशरथ को 'काकुत्स्थ' और 'श्रीमान' कहा गया है, जो उनके गौरवशाली अतीत को दर्शाता है, परन्तु वर्तमान स्थिति 'सन्नः' (अवसन्न/निस्तेज) है। उपमा अलंकार के माध्यम से कवि कहते हैं कि जैसे ग्रहण चन्द्रमा की सारी 'श्री' (शोभा) हर ले जाता है, वैसे ही राम-वियोग रूपी ग्रहण ने दशरथ के जीवन का सारा तेज हर लिया है।
