रामो याहीति सूतम् तम् तिष्ठेति स जनस्तदा ।
उभयम् नाशकत्सूतः कर्तुमध्वनि चोदितः ॥ ॥२-४०-३२॥
rāmo yāhīti sūtam tam tiṣṭheti sa janastadā |
ubhayam nāśakatsūtaḥ kartumadhvani coditaḥ ॥2-40-32॥
Translation
Rama was telling the charioteer "Go!", while the people were shouting "Stop!". Urged thus on the road, the charioteer could neither move forward nor stay.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम सारथी से कह रहे थे "जाओ (चलो)", और वे लोग (प्रजाजन) कह रहे थे "रुको"। रास्ते में इस प्रकार (दो विपरीत दिशाओं से) प्रेरित किए जाने पर सारथी न जा सका और न रुक सका।
English Commentary
Sumantra faces a physical and moral dilemma. The command yahi (go) from Rama conflicts with the command tishtha (stay/stop) from the multitude. He is frozen in a state of paralysis, unable to fully obey either the Prince he serves or the people he loves. It captures the tension between Duty (Rama's resolve) and Attachment (the people's love).

यह सुमन्त्र का 'धर्म-संकट' है। एक ओर भावी राजा और स्वामी राम की आज्ञा है, दूसरी ओर प्रजा और वर्तमान राजा दशरथ का प्रेमपूर्ण आग्रह। सुमन्त्र की स्थिति उस व्यक्ति जैसी है जो दो शक्तिशाली बलों के बीच फंस गया हो। 'नाशकत्' (समर्थ नहीं हो सका) शब्द उनकी विवशता और मानसिक द्वंद्व को स्पष्ट करता है।
