Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
निर्गच्छति महाबाहौ रामे पौरजनाश्रुभिः ।
पतितैरभ्यवहितम् प्रशशाम महीरजः ॥ ॥२-४०-३३॥
nirgacchati mahābāhau rāme paurajanāśrubhiḥ |
patitairabhyavahitam praśaśāma mahīrajaḥ ॥2-40-33॥
Translation
As the mighty-armed Rama was departing, the dust of the earth was settled (subsided) by the falling tears of the citizens.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महाबाहु राम के (नगर से) बाहर निकलते समय, पौरजनों (नागरिकों) के गिरते हुए आंसुओं से दबकर पृथ्वी की धूल शांत हो गई।
English Commentary
This verse uses poetic hyperbole to measure the grief of Ayodhya. Usually, a departing chariot raises dust (mahirajah). Here, the torrent of tears (ashrubhih) shedding from the citizens is so voluminous that it acts like rain, settling the dust. It signifies that the collective sorrow of the city was physically palpable, altering the very environment around them.

यह एक अतिशयोक्तिपूर्ण (Hyperbolic) किन्तु अत्यंत भावुक वर्णन है। रथ के चलने से धूल उड़नी चाहिए थी, किन्तु नागरिकों के आंसुओं की वर्षा इतनी अधिक थी कि धूल ही बैठ गई। यह प्रजा के दुःख की विशालता (Magnitude) को दर्शाता है। पूरी अयोध्या रो रही है, और उनके आंसुओं ने मार्ग को गीला कर दिया है।
