Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रुदिताश्रुपरिद्यूनम् हाहाकृतमचेतनम् ।
प्रयाणे राघवस्यासीत्पुरम् परमपीडितम् ॥ ॥२-४०-३४॥
ruditāśruparidyūnam hāhākṛtamacetanam |
prayāṇe rāghavasyāsītpuram paramapīḍitam ॥2-40-34॥
Translation
At the time of Raghava's departure, the city was miserable with weeping and tears, filled with cries of "Ha! Ha!", insensate, and in supreme distress.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राघव के प्रस्थान के समय, पूरा नगर आंसुओं से भीगा हुआ, 'हा-हा' कार करता हुआ, अचेत (सुध-बुध खोया हुआ) और अत्यंत पीड़ित हो गया।
English Commentary
The atmosphere is defined by Hahakritam—the cries of "Ha! Ha!" or "Alas!". The city is parama piditam (supremely tormented). The description acetanam (devoid of consciousness/senseless) suggests a mass hysteria or a state of shock where rational thought has ceased, and only raw emotion remains as their beloved prince leaves.

'हाहाकृतम्' शब्द उस भयानक ध्वनि को वर्णित करता है जो गहरे आघात के समय निकलती है। नगर की अवस्था 'अचेतनम्' (चेतना रहित) है, यानी लोग सदमे (Shock) में हैं। 'परमपीडितम्' बताता है कि पीड़ा अपनी चरम सीमा पर है। यह श्लोक विदाई के समय के कोलाहल और सामूहिक विलाप का सजीव चित्रण है।
