सुस्राव नयनैः स्त्रीणामस्रमायाससम्भवम् ।
मीनसम्क्षोभचलितैः सलिलम् पङ्कजैरिव ॥ ॥२-४०-३५॥
susrāva nayanaiḥ strīṇāmasramāyāsasambhavam |
mīnasamkṣobhacalitaiḥ salilam paṅkajairiva ॥2-40-35॥
Translation
Tears born of anguish flowed from the women's eyes, just as water drops fall from lotuses shaken by the agitation of fish.
हिंदी अनुवाद
स्त्रियों के नेत्रों से दुःख (आयास) के कारण आंसू वैसे ही बहने लगे, जैसे मछलियों के तड़पने (हलचल) से हिलते हुए कमलों से पानी झड़ता है।
English Commentary
A breathtaking simile amidst the tragedy. The women's eyes are lotuses (pankaja), and their inner agitation manifests as the movement of fish (mina) disturbing the flower. Just as a shaken lotus sheds water, their eyes shed tears due to ayasa (anguish). It captures the trembling, uncontrollable nature of their grief while maintaining poetic beauty.

यह वाल्मीकि की काव्य-प्रतिभा का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। नेत्रों की उपमा 'कमल' (पङ्कज) से दी गई है, और भीतर की व्याकुलता या पुतलियों की हलचल की उपमा 'मीन' (मछली) से। जैसे मछली के तड़पने से कमल हिलता है और पानी गिरता है, वैसे ही मन की व्याकुलता से नेत्रों से अविरल अश्रुधारा बह रही है। सौंदर्य और शोक का अद्भुत मिश्रण।
