ततो हलहलाशब्दो जज्ञे रामस्य पृष्ठतः ।
नराणाम् प्रेक्ष्य राजानम् सीदन्तम् भृशदुःखितम् ॥ ॥२-४०-३७॥
Tato halahalāśabdo jajñe rāmasya pṛṣṭhataḥ । Narāṇām prekṣya rājānam sīdantam bhṛśaduḥkhitam ॥ ॥2-40-37॥
Translation
Then, a tumultuous cry of distress arose behind Rama from the people, as they saw King Dasharatha fainting, overcome by immense grief.

राम के पीछे चलने वाले लोगों में, राजा दशरथ को अत्यंत दुखी होकर गिरते (मूर्छित होते) देख, 'हाहाकार' (हलहला शब्द) मच गया।
English Commentary
This verse captures the chaotic despair that erupted at the moment of departure. The onomatopoeic word 'Halahala' signifies a loud, collective wail of distress. The citizens witness a shocking sight: their mighty Emperor Dasharatha, usually a pillar of strength, collapsing in sheer agony. It underscores that Rama's exile was not merely a family dispute but a national tragedy. Seeing the King physically succumb to grief shattered the composure of the crowd, turning a royal procession into a scene of utter pandemonium and shared sorrow.
