अन्वीक्षमाणो रामस्तु विषण्णं भ्रान्तचेतसम् ।
राजानं मातरं चैव ददर्शानुगतौ पथि ॥ ॥२-४०-३९॥
Anvīkṣamāṇo rāmastu viṣaṇṇam bhrāntacetasam । Rājānam mātaram caiva dadarśānugatau pathi ॥ ॥2-40-39॥
Translation
Looking back, Rama saw his father and mother following him on the path, filled with sorrow and their minds dazed with grief.

पीछे मुड़कर देखते हुए राम ने अपने पिता और माता को विषाद से भरे हुए, व्याकुल चित्त के साथ अपने पीछे रास्ते पर आते हुए देखा।
English Commentary
This depicts a harrowing moment for Rama. He witnesses the unimaginable: his royal parents, usually surrounded by pomp and dignity, stumbling on the common road like destitute beggars. The term 'Bhrantachetasam' (dazed minds) suggests they are delirious with grief, oblivious to their surroundings or royal protocol. For a dutiful son like Rama, seeing his parents in such a wretched state—running after his chariot in the dust—is a torture greater than the exile itself. His act of looking back reveals that despite his resolve, his heart is tethered to them.
