स बद्ध इव पाशेन किशोरो मातरं यथा ।
धर्मपाशेन संक्षिप्तः प्रकाशं नाभ्युदैक्षत ॥ ॥२-४०-४०॥
Sa baddha iva pāśena kiśoro mātaram yathā । Dharmapāśena saṃkṣiptaḥ prakāśam nābhyudaikṣata ॥ ॥2-40-40॥
Translation
Just as a colt bound by a rope cannot go to its mother, Rama, bound tight by the snare of Dharma, could not look at them openly.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे रस्सी से बंधा हुआ बछड़ा अपनी माँ को नहीं देख पाता (उसके पास नहीं जा पाता), वैसे ही धर्म के बंधन (धर्मपाश) में जकड़े हुए राम, लाचारी के कारण उनकी ओर खुलकर देख भी नहीं सके।
English Commentary
This verse employs a powerful metaphor to explain Rama's seeming indifference. He is compared to a young colt tied to a post, desperate to rush to its mother but physically restrained. The rope restraining Rama is the 'Dharma-pasha' (the bond of righteousness/truth). He is not heartless; he is helpless against the weight of his vow. He deliberately avoids sustained eye contact not out of arrogance, but because he knows that engaging with their sorrow would shatter his resolve to uphold the truth. It is an act of self-preservation for the sake of Dharma.

यहाँ वाल्मीकि जी ने एक बहुत ही मार्मिक उपमा दी है। राम की तुलना उस बछड़े से की गई है जो अपनी माँ के पास जाना चाहता है, लेकिन खूंटे से बंधी रस्सी उसे रोक लेती है। यहाँ वह रस्सी 'धर्म' और 'सत्य' की है (पिता का वचन)। राम निष्ठुर नहीं हैं, वे विवश हैं। यदि वे रुकते हैं या भावुक होकर लौटते हैं, तो सत्य खंडित होता है। इसलिए, वे 'प्रकाशं नाभ्युदैक्षत' (खुलकर नहीं देख सके)—यानी उन्होंने अपनी नज़रें फेर लीं, क्योंकि माता-पिता का दुःख देखने पर उनका संकल्प टूट सकता था।
