तम् वन्दमानम् रुदती माता सौमित्रिम् अब्रवीत् ।
हित कामा महा बाहुम् मूर्ध्नि उपाघ्राय लक्ष्मणम् ॥ ॥२-४०-४॥
tam vandamānam rudatī mātā saumitrim abravīt |
hita kāmā mahā bāhum mūrdhni upāghrāya lakṣmaṇam ॥2-40-4॥
Translation
While he was offering salutations, his weeping mother Sumitra smelled the head of the mighty-armed Lakshmana and spoke words wishing for his welfare.

वंदना करते हुए उस महाबाहु लक्ष्मण का मस्तक सूँघकर, रोती हुई माता सुमित्रा ने उनका हित चाहने वाले वचन कहे।
English Commentary
Smelling the head (murdhni upaghraya) was a traditional gesture of deep maternal affection and blessing in ancient India. Although Sumitra is weeping due to the natural pain of separation, she is described as hita kama (wishing for his welfare). She recognizes that for a warrior and a devotee like Lakshmana, true welfare lies in fulfilling his duty towards his brother, not in staying back in comfort. This sets the stage for her profound advice in the following verses.

मस्तक सूँघना (मूर्ध्नि उपाघ्राय) प्राचीन भारत में आशीर्वाद देने का एक वात्सल्य पूर्ण तरीका था। सुमित्रा रो रही हैं क्योंकि पुत्र वियोग का दुःख स्वाभाविक है, किन्तु वे मोह में फंसकर लक्ष्मण को रोकती नहीं हैं। वे 'हित कामा' हैं, अर्थात वे पुत्र का सच्चा हित जानती हैं। उन्हें पता है कि लक्ष्मण का कल्याण राम की सेवा में ही है, अयोध्या के राजमहल में नहीं। यह सुमित्रा के चरित्र की महानता की भूमिका है।
