पदातिनौ च यानार्हावदुःखार्हौ सुखोचितौ ।
दृष्ट्वा संचोदयामास शीघ्रं याहीति सारथिम् ॥ ॥२-४०-४१॥
Padātinau ca yānārhāvaduḥkhārhau sukhocitau । Dṛṣṭvā saṃcodayāmāsa śīghram yāhīti sārathim ॥ ॥2-40-41॥
Translation
Seeing those deserving of chariots walking on foot, and those deserving of happiness suffering such pain, Rama urged the charioteer: "Go faster! Go faster!"

जो (माता-पिता) वाहन पर चलने योग्य थे, जो दुःख के नहीं बल्कि केवल सुख के योग्य थे, उन्हें पैदल चलते देख राम ने सारथी (सुमंत) को आदेश दिया—"शीघ्र चलो! शीघ्र चलो!"
English Commentary
Rama’s command to "Go faster" is paradoxically an act of mercy, not cruelty. He realizes that his visible presence is the magnet drawing his parents through the dust and pain. As long as he is in sight, they will continue to torture themselves by running after him. By speeding up, he aims to sever the visual connection, forcing them to stop and return. The adjectives used—that they deserve chariots and happiness—highlight Rama's guilt and agony at being the instrumental cause of the suffering of those who deserve only comfort.

राम का 'शीघ्र चलो' कहना निष्ठुरता नहीं, बल्कि अपार करुणा का परिचायक है। वे अपने पूज्य माता-पिता को इस दयनीय अवस्था में पैदल चलते हुए और अधिक नहीं देख सकते। राम जानते हैं कि जब तक वे आँखों के सामने रहेंगे, दशरथ और कौशल्या उनके पीछे दौड़ते रहेंगे। इस कष्ट को समाप्त करने का एक ही उपाय है—जल्द से जल्द ओझल हो जाना। 'सुखोचितौ' (सुख के योग्य) शब्द राम की वेदना को गहरा करता है—वे सोच रहे हैं कि मेरे कारण मेरे माता-पिता को यह कष्ट भोगना पड़ रहा है।
