प्रत्यगारमिवायान्ती वत्सला वत्सकारणात् ।
बद्धवत्सा यथा धेनू राममाताभ्यधावत ॥ ॥२-४०-४३॥
Pratyagāramivāyāntī vatsalā vatsakāraṇāt । Baddhavatsā yathā dhenū rāmamātābhyadhāvata ॥ ॥2-40-43॥
Translation
Just as a cow runs towards its shed (or calf) when the calf is tied up, Rama’s mother, filled with affection, ran after the chariot for the sake of her child.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे बछड़े के बंधे होने (या ले जाए जाने) पर गाय गौशाला की ओर (या बछड़े की ओर) दौड़ती है, वैसे ही पुत्र-प्रेम से भरी राम की माता कौशल्या रथ के पीछे दौड़ पड़ीं।
English Commentary
This is one of the most evocative images of Vatsalya Rasa (parental love) in the Ramayana. Kausalya strips away her royal persona and becomes primal in her grief, likened to a cow whose calf is being forcibly taken away. A cow in such a state is blind to everything except her offspring. The comparison emphasizes the purity and intensity of her love; it is instinctive, desperate, and uncontrollable. The Queen running in the dust behind a chariot illustrates the total collapse of hierarchy in the face of raw human emotion.

वाल्मीकि रामायण में वात्सल्य रस का यह सर्वश्रेष्ठ उदाहरण है। कौशल्या की तुलना उस गाय से की गई है जिसका बछड़ा उससे छीना जा रहा हो। एक गाय को न अपनी सुध रहती है, न मार्ग की बाधाओं की, उसका पूरा ध्यान केवल अपने बछड़े पर होता है। 'वत्सला' शब्द का अर्थ ही है 'बछड़े (वत्स) से प्रेम करने वाली'। कौशल्या का राजरानी का पद, शिष्टाचार, और मर्यादा—सब पुत्र-प्रेम के वेग में बह गए। यह दृश्य इतना करुण है कि पत्थर को भी पिघला दे।
