Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नाश्रौषमिति राजानमुपालब्धोऽपि वक्ष्यसि ।
चिरं दुःखस्य पापिष्ठमिति रामस्तमब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-४०-४७॥
Nāśrauṣamiti rājānamupālabdho'pi vakṣyasi । Ciram duḥkhasya pāpiṣṭhamiti rāmastamabravīt ॥ ॥2-40-47॥
Translation
Rama said to him, "Even if scolded by the King, say 'I did not hear.' For prolonging this grief is a terrible sin."
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम ने सुमंत से कहा—"राजा द्वारा उलाहना (डांट) दिए जाने पर भी तुम कह देना कि 'मैंने सुना नहीं'। क्योंकि इस दुःख का देर तक बने रहना अत्यंत पापपूर्ण (कष्टकारी) है।"
English Commentary
Rama displays incredible pragmatic wisdom here. He advises Sumantra to use a diplomatic lie ("I didn't hear you") to resolve the stalemate. This is significant because Rama, the embodiment of Truth, advocates a falsehood. However, the context justifies it: stopping the chariot would not save the King, but only prolong the torture for everyone and potentially weaken Dasharatha’s resolve to keep his promise to Kaikeyi. Rama identifies the prolongation of this grief as papishtham (most sinful/cruel), prioritizing the spirit of compassion over the letter of obedience.
