Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न्यवर्तत जनो राज्ञो रामं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् ।
मनसाप्यश्रुवेगैश्च न न्यवर्तत मानुषम् ॥ ॥२-४०-४९॥
Nyavartata jano rājño rāmam kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam । Manasāpyaśruvegaiśca na nyavartata mānuṣam ॥ ॥2-40-49॥
Translation
The people accompanying the King turned back physically after circumambulating Rama (as a mark of respect), but their minds and their flowing tears did not turn back from him.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राजा के (साथ आए हुए) लोग राम की (मानसिक) परिक्रमा करके शरीर से तो लौट पड़े, किन्तु अपने मन और आंसुओं के वेग से वे (राम से) नहीं लौट सके।
English Commentary
This verse poignantly illustrates the dichotomy between duty and devotion. Physically, the citizens were forced to turn back to Ayodhya, performing a pradakshina (circumambulation) as a final gesture of reverence. However, the poet notes that their 'minds and tears did not return.' They became walking shells; their emotional core remained tethered to Rama. It signifies that while the physical separation had occurred, the spiritual connection remained unbroken, manifested through their unceasing tears.

यह श्लोक शरीर और आत्मा के वियोग का सुंदर चित्रण है। परिक्रमा करना विदाई और सम्मान का प्रतीक है। प्रजाजन राजा के आदेश या परिस्थिति के कारण शरीर से तो अयोध्या लौटने को विवश थे, लेकिन उनका 'मानुषम्' (मनुष्यत्व/हृदय) राम के साथ ही वन की ओर चला गया। उनके शरीर अयोध्या लौट रहे थे, लेकिन वे खोखले थे; उनकी चेतना और भावनाएं राम के रथ के पीछे थीं। 'अश्रुवेग' (आंसुओं का प्रवाह) का न लौटना दर्शाता है कि उनका शोक निरंतर बह रहा था।
