Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तेषां वचः सर्वगुणोपपन्नम् ।
प्रस्विन्नगात्रः प्रविषण्णरूपः ।
निशम्य राजा कृपणः सभार्यो ।
व्यवस्थितस्तं सुतमीक्षमाणः ॥ ॥२-४०-५१॥
Teṣām vacaḥ sarvaguṇopapannam । Prasvinnagātraḥ praviṣaṇṇarūpaḥ । Niśamya rājā kṛpaṇaḥ sabhāryo । Vyavasthitaḥ tam sutamīkṣamāṇaḥ ॥ ॥2-40-51॥
Translation
Hearing their well-reasoned words, the King—his body covered in sweat, looking utterly dejected and wretched—stopped there with his wives, gazing fixedly at his son.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मंत्रियों के उस सर्वगुण-सम्पन्न (उचित) वचन को सुनकर, पसीने से लथपथ शरीर वाले, अत्यंत उदास और दयनीय राजा दशरथ अपनी पत्नियों सहित वहीं रुक गए और अपने पुत्र (के रथ) की ओर एकटक देखने लगे।
English Commentary
This closing verse of the 40th Sarga paints a tragic portrait of Emperor Dasharatha. Described as kripanah (wretched) and dripping with sweat (prasvinna-gatrah), he has lost all royal composure. He halts only because he hopes it will ensure Rama's return, as suggested by the ministers. Standing amidst the dust with his weeping wives, gazing at the fading chariot, he embodies the total collapse of a father who has lost his reason for living.

यह सर्ग 40 का अंतिम श्लोक है। राजा की स्थिति अत्यंत दयनीय है—'प्रस्विन्नगात्रः' (पसीने से तर-बतर) और 'कृपणः' (दीन-हीन)। जो चक्रवर्ती सम्राट था, वह आज सड़क पर धूल और पसीने में खड़ा है। मंत्रियों की बात मानकर वे रुक तो गए, लेकिन उनकी आँखें अब भी क्षितिज पर टिकी हैं जहाँ राम का रथ ओझल हो रहा है। यह श्लोक राजा की असहायता और पुत्र-प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा को दर्शाता है।
