Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
व्यसनी वा समृद्धो वा गतिर् एष तव अनघ ।
एष लोके सताम् धर्मः यज् ज्येष्ठ वशगो भवेत् ॥ ॥२-४०-६॥
vyasanī vā samṛddho vā gatir eṣa tava anagha |
eṣa loke satām dharmaḥ yaj jyeṣṭha vaśago bhavet ॥2-40-6॥
Translation
Whether in distress or in prosperity, he (Rama) alone is your refuge, O sinless one. In this world, it is the dharma of the righteous to be obedient to the eldest brother.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे निष्पाप पुत्र! चाहे राम संकट में हों या समृद्धि में, यही तुम्हारे एकमात्र आश्रय (गति) हैं। संसार में सज्जनों का यही धर्म है कि वे अपने ज्येष्ठ भ्राता के वश (आज्ञा) में रहें।
English Commentary
Sumitra instructs Lakshmana on the unconditional nature of loyalty. She asserts that Rama is his gati (refuge/destiny) regardless of whether Rama is vyasani (in trouble) or samriddho (prosperous). True loyalty does not waver with changing fortunes. She reinforces the Vedic ideal that a younger brother should support the eldest, framing it not just as a family rule, but as the universal dharma of righteous people.

सुमित्रा लक्ष्मण को 'अनघ' (पाप रहित) कहती हैं और उन्हें राजनीति और धर्म का पाठ पढ़ाती हैं। वे स्पष्ट करती हैं कि निष्ठा परिस्थितियों पर निर्भर नहीं होनी चाहिए। चाहे राम राजा बनें या वनवासी, लक्ष्मण के लिए राम ही सब कुछ हैं। ज्येष्ठ भ्राता के प्रति समर्पण को ही उन्होंने 'सताम् धर्मः' (सज्जनों का धर्म) कहा है। यह शिक्षा आज भी भाई-भाई के प्रेम और कर्तव्य का आदर्श मानी जाती है।
