इदम् हि वृत्तम् उचितम् कुलस्य अस्य सनातनम् ।
दानम् दीक्षा च यज्ञेषु तनु त्यागो मृधेषु च ॥ ॥२-४०-७॥
idam hi vṛttam ucitam kulasya asya sanātanam |
dānam dīkṣā ca yajñeṣu tanu tyāgo mṛdheṣu ca ॥2-40-7॥
Translation
Indeed, this is the eternal and appropriate conduct of this lineage: charity, initiation into sacrifices, and casting off the body in battle.

इस कुल (रघुकुल/इक्ष्वाकु वंश) का यही सनातन और उचित आचरण रहा है—दान देना, यज्ञों में दीक्षा लेना और युद्ध में शरीर का त्याग करना।
English Commentary
Sumitra invokes the Sanatana (eternal) tradition of the Ikshvaku lineage to embolden Lakshmana. She lists the duties of their royal house: charity, religious rites, and the willingness to die in battle (tanu tyago mridheshu). By equating the hardships of the forest with the glory of battle sacrifice, she elevates Lakshmana's exile from a tragedy to a noble duty consistent with his warrior ancestry. She is effectively telling him that hardship is his birthright and privilege.

सुमित्रा यहाँ क्षत्रिय धर्म और रघुकुल की परंपरा की याद दिलाती हैं। वे लक्ष्मण को बताती हैं कि वन जाना और कष्ट सहना कोई नई बात नहीं है; उनके पूर्वजों ने धर्म के लिए प्राण तक त्यागे हैं। 'तनु त्यागो' (शरीर त्यागना) कहकर वे लक्ष्मण को यह साहस देती हैं कि राम की रक्षा में यदि प्राण भी देने पड़ें, तो पीछे मत हटना। यह एक वीरांगना माँ का अपने वीर पुत्र को संदेश है।
