Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
व्यसृजन् कबलान्नागा गावो वत्सान्न पाययन् ।
पुत्रं प्रथमजं लब्ध्वा जननी नाभ्यनन्दत ॥ ॥२-४१-१०॥
Vyasṛjan kavalānnāgā gāvo vatsānna pāyayan । Putram prathamajam labdhvā jananī nābhyanandata ॥ ॥2-41-10॥
Translation
Elephants spat out their fodder, and cows did not nurse their calves. Even a mother who had just given birth to her firstborn son felt no joy.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हाथियों ने (मुंह में लिया हुआ) चारा उगल दिया और गायों ने बछड़ों को दूध नहीं पिलाया। (शोक इतना गहरा था कि) प्रथम पुत्र को जन्म देने के बाद भी माँ ने आनंद का अनुभव नहीं किया।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates the absolute suspension of joy in Ayodhya. In traditional culture, the birth of a firstborn son is considered the pinnacle of happiness for a mother. Yet, the gloom caused by Rama's exile was so oppressive that it eclipsed even this supreme moment of personal celebration. The reference to animals—elephants rejecting food and cows rejecting their calves—signifies that the grief was primal, overriding basic biological instincts of hunger and maternal care across all species.

यह श्लोक शोक की पराकाष्ठा को दर्शाता है। भारतीय संस्कृति में 'प्रथम पुत्र' का जन्म एक स्त्री और परिवार के लिए सबसे बड़े उत्सव का क्षण होता है। किन्तु, राम के वन गमन का दुःख इतना भारी था कि उसने इस नैसर्गिक आनंद को भी दबा दिया। जीव-जंतुओं (हाथी और गाय) का व्यवहार यह दिखाता है कि राम का वियोग केवल मनुष्यों तक सीमित नहीं था, बल्कि इसने पशुओं की भूख और मातृत्व की स्वाभाविक वृत्ति को भी समाप्त कर दिया था।
