Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नाग्निहोत्राण्यहूयन्त सूर्यश्चान्तरधीयत ।
व्यसृजन् कवलान् नागा गावो वत्सान् न पाययन् ॥ ॥२-४१-९॥
Nāgnihotrāṇyahūyanta sūryaścāntaradhīyata । Vyasṛjan kavalān nāgā gāvo vatsān na pāyayan ॥ ॥2-41-9॥
Translation
The Agnihotra fires were not offered, and the sun vanished (set). Elephants spat out their fodder, and cows did not nurse their calves.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उस दिन अयोध्या में) अग्निहोत्र नहीं किए गए, सूर्यदेव अस्त हो गए (मानो दुःख से छिप गए)। हाथियों ने अपने मुँह के कवल (ग्रास) उगल दिए और गायों ने अपने बछड़ों को दूध नहीं पिलाया।
English Commentary
This verse vividly portrays the cosmic and ecological disruption caused by Rama's exile. The grief is so profound that it halts the rhythms of nature and religion. The sacred fires are left unlit (spiritual darkness), the sun sets (physical darkness), and animals defy their instincts—elephants refuse food, and cows refuse to nurse. It signifies that with Rama's departure, the life force of Ayodhya has been drained, plunging the city into a state of lifeless despair.

यह श्लोक 'प्रकृति-सहानुभूति' (Pathetic Fallacy) का अद्भुत उदाहरण है। राम के वियोग में केवल मनुष्य ही नहीं, बल्कि पशु-पक्षी और प्रकृति भी शोकमग्न है। अग्निहोत्र न होना धार्मिक कृत्यों के रुकने का संकेत है—धर्म ही चला गया तो कर्मकांड कैसा? हाथियों का खाना छोड़ देना और गायों का बछड़ों को दूध न पिलाना यह दर्शाता है कि जीवन की मूलभूत वृत्ति (भूख और वात्सल्य) भी शोक के कारण समाप्त हो गई। सूर्य का अस्त होना अयोध्या के अंधकारमय भविष्य का प्रतीक है।
