शोकपर्यायसंतप्तः सततं दीर्घमुच्छ्वसन् ।
अयोध्यायां जनः सर्वः शुशोच जगतीपतिम् ॥ ॥२-४१-१६॥
Śokaparyāyasantaptaḥ satatam dīrghamucchvasan । Ayodhyāyām janaḥ sarvaḥ śuśoca jagatīpatim ॥ ॥2-41-16॥
Translation
Scorched by waves of grief and sighing constantly and deeply, all the people in Ayodhya mourned for the Lord of the Earth (Dasharatha).

शोक की लहरों से संतप्त और लगातार लंबी सांसें भरते हुए, अयोध्या के सभी लोग राजा (दशरथ) के लिए शोक करने लगे।
English Commentary
The focus of the public's grief shifts to the King. Understanding the fatal bond between the father and son, the citizens realize that Rama's departure is likely a death sentence for Dasharatha. "Scorched by waves of grief," they sigh deeply, anticipating the inevitable tragedy. Their mourning for the "Lord of the Earth" implies that they already consider him a lost cause, a victim of his own truthfulness.

प्रजा का ध्यान अब राम से हटकर राजा दशरथ की ओर गया। वे जानते थे कि राम तो चले गए, लेकिन राजा दशरथ इस आघात को सह नहीं पाएंगे। 'दीर्घमुच्छ्वसन्' (लंबी आहें भरना) चिंता और भय का लक्षण है। लोग राजा की आलोचना नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि उनके दुर्भाग्य पर शोक मना रहे हैं क्योंकि वे जानते हैं कि राजा ने प्रिय पुत्र को खोकर अपनी मृत्यु को निमंत्रण दिया है।
