कौसल्यायां महातेजा यथा मातरि वर्तते ।
तथा यो वर्ततेऽस्मासु महात्मा क्व नु गच्छति ॥ ॥२-४१-४॥
Kausalyāyām mahātejā yathā mātari vartate । Tathā yo vartate'smāsu mahātmā kva nu gacchati ॥ ॥2-41-4॥
Translation
Where is that great soul going, who treats us with the same reverence and love as he treats his own mother Kausalya?
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह महातेजस्वी राम, जो जैसा व्यवहार अपनी माता कौशल्या के साथ करते हैं, वैसा ही व्यवहार (सम्मान और प्रेम) हम सबके साथ भी करते हैं, वे महात्मा कहाँ जा रहे हैं?
English Commentary
This verse highlights Rama's impartiality and nobility within a polygamous royal household. Usually, stepmothers might be treated differently, but Rama treated all the King’s wives exactly as he treated his biological mother, Kausalya. This is why his departure is a personal tragedy for every woman in the harem, not just Kausalya. By calling him Mahatma (Great Soul), they acknowledge his transcendence of petty domestic politics and biases.

यह श्लोक सिद्ध करता है कि राम आदर्श पुत्र थे—केवल कौशल्या के नहीं, बल्कि सभी माताओं के। बहुविवाह वाली राजशाही व्यवस्था में सौतेली माताओं के बीच ईर्ष्या सामान्य थी, लेकिन राम ने अपने व्यवहार से उस भेद को मिटा दिया था। वे कैकेयी और सुमित्रा को भी वही सम्मान देते थे जो कौशल्या को। इसीलिए आज पूरा रनिवास रो रहा है। राम 'महात्मा' (महान आत्मा) हैं क्योंकि उन्होंने रिश्तों में भेद नहीं किया।
