Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अहो निश्चेतनो राजा जीवलोकस्य संप्रियम् ।
धर्म्यं सत्यव्रतं रामं वनवासे प्रवत्स्यति ॥ ॥२-४१-६॥
Aho niścetano rājā jīvalokasya saṃpriyam । Dharmyam satyavratam rāmam vanavāse pravatsyati ॥ ॥2-41-6॥
Translation
Alas! The King has lost his senses, for he is sending to exile into the forest Rama, who is righteous, devoted to truth, and beloved of all living beings.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अहो! राजा (दशरथ) कितने विवेकहीन (अचेत) हो गए हैं, जो समस्त जीवलोक के प्रिय, धर्मात्मा और सत्यव्रती राम को वनवास भेज रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Sorrow hardens into judgement. The King is openly criticized as nischetano (senseless or lacking in judgment). Sending Rama—who is the embodiment of Dharma and loved by all living things (jivalokasya sampriyam)—into exile is seen as an act of insanity. This verse reflects the sentiment that by upholding a private promise to Kaikeyi, the King has committed a public atrocity against the entire kingdom and the principles of righteousness.

शोक अब क्रोध और आलोचना में बदल गया है। प्रजा और रनिवास की स्त्रियां राजा दशरथ को 'निश्चेतन' (चेतना शून्य/मूर्ख) कह रही हैं। राजा का प्राथमिक कर्तव्य धर्म और प्रजा के हित की रक्षा है। राम को वन भेजकर राजा ने प्रजा के सबसे प्रिय व्यक्ति को उनसे छीन लिया है। यह निर्णय इतना अस्वाभाविक है कि इसे केवल 'पागलपन' या 'बुद्धि का नाश' ही माना जा सकता है। यहाँ राजा के प्रति प्रजा के आक्रोश की झलक मिलती है।
