अथ रात्र्याम् प्रपन्नायाम् कालरात्र्यामिआत्मनः | अर्धरात्रे दशरथह् कौसल्यामिदमब्रवीत् ॥२-४२-३२॥
atha rātryām prapannāyām kālarātryāmi ātmanaḥ |
ardharātre daśarathaḥ kausalyām idam abravīt ॥2-42-32॥
Translation
Then, when the night arrived, which was like the night of death (Kālarātrī) for him, at midnight Dasharatha spoke this to Kausalya.

English Commentary
This verse marks the final moments of King Dasharatha's life. The arrival of night (rātryām prapannāyām) is described as the 'kālarātryām' (night of death for him). This symbolism is profound, as night represents darkness and sorrow, and without Rama, it is the end of life for the king. Midnight (ardharātre), the time when grief is at its peak and clarity fades, witnesses the king's final lament. Dasharatha's conversation with Kausalya indicates that he was seeking solace and shared sorrow in the final moments of his life.
