रामम् मेऽनुगता दृष्टिरद्यापि न निवर्तते | न त्वाम् पश्यामि कौसल्ये साधु माम् पाणिना स्पृश ॥२-४२-३३॥
rāmam me 'nugatā dṛṣṭir adyāpi na nivartate |
na tvām paśyāmi kausalye sādhu mām pāṇinā spṛśa ॥2-42-33॥
Translation
"My sight, which followed Rama, is still not returning today. O Kausalya, I cannot see you, please touch me with your hand."

"राम के पीछे गई मेरी दृष्टि आज भी नहीं लौट रही है। हे कौसल्या, मैं तुम्हें देख नहीं पा रहा हूँ, कृपया मुझे हाथ से स्पर्श करो।"
English Commentary
This is one of the King Dasharatha's final and most poignant moments. 'Rāmam me 'nugatā dṛṣṭir adyāpi na nivartate' means that his eyes are still fixed on the path where Rama went, as if Rama is still the focus of his vision. His final sight ends upon Rama. His statement to Kausalya that he cannot see her indicates his blindness (likely due to grief or approaching death). The plea 'sādhu mām pāṇinā spṛśa' (please touch me with your hand) expresses the king's extreme helplessness and his final desire for consolation through physical contact. He cannot see Rama with his eyes, so he wishes to feel Kausalya's presence through touch.

यह राजा दशरथ के अंतिम और अत्यंत मार्मिक क्षणों में से एक है। 'रामम् मेऽनुगता दृष्टिरद्यापि न निवर्तते' यह बताता है कि उनकी आँखें राम के जाने के मार्ग पर ही टिकी हुई हैं, मानो राम अभी भी उनकी दृष्टि के केंद्र में हों। उनकी यह अंतिम दृष्टि राम पर ही समाप्त होती है। उनका कौसल्या से यह कहना कि वे उन्हें देख नहीं पा रहे हैं, उनकी अंधता (संभवतः दुःख या मृत्यु के निकट आने के कारण) को दर्शाता है। 'साधु माम् पाणिना स्पृश' (कृपया मुझे हाथ से स्पর্শ करो) का आग्रह राजा की चरम असहायता और शारीरिक संपर्क के माध्यम से सांत्वना पाने की अंतिम इच्छा को व्यक्त करता है। वे राम को आँखों से नहीं देख पा रहे हैं, इसलिए स्पर्श के माध्यम से कौसल्या की उपस्थिति महसूस करना चाहते हैं।
