तस्य दक्षिणम् अन्वगात् कौसल्या बाहुम् अन्गना ।
वामम् च अस्य अन्वगात् पार्श्वम् कैकेयी भरत प्रिया ॥२-४२-४॥
tasya dakṣiṇam anvagāt kausalyā bāhum anganā |
vāmam ca asya anvagāt pārśvam kaikeyī bharata priyā ॥2-42-4॥
Translation
Queen Kausalya held his right arm to support him, while Kaikeyi, the mother dear to Bharata, approached his left side to assist.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(मूर्च्छित राजा को उठाने के लिए) महारानी कौसल्या ने उनकी दाहिनी भुजा को सहारा दिया और भरत की प्रिय माता कैकेयी उनके बाईं ओर आईं।
English Commentary
The positioning of the queens is deeply symbolic in Hindu thought. Kausalya, the embodiment of Dharma and the primary queen, takes the right side (dakṣiṇa), which is auspicious and represents rightful authority. Kaikeyi takes the left (vāma), often associated with pleasure or secondary status, but here highlighting her opposing role. The epithet Bharata-priyā (dear to Bharata) identifies her motive—her love for her son drove this tragedy. Her attempt to support the King shows she is perhaps oblivious to the extent of his hatred towards her at this moment, expecting to resume her role as a wife, which triggers Dasharatha's subsequent explosion of rage.

इस श्लोक में रानियों की स्थिति और उनका व्यवहार अत्यंत सांकेतिक है। दाहिना भाग (दक्षिण बाहु) सम्मान और धर्म का प्रतीक है, जिसे कौसल्या ने थामा है, जो उनकी धर्मपत्नी और पटरानी होने का प्रमाण है। बायां भाग (वाम पार्श्व) काम और भोग का प्रतीक माना जा सकता है, जहाँ कैकेयी उपस्थित है। वाल्मीकि जी ने कैकेयी के लिए 'भरत प्रिया' विशेषण का प्रयोग व्यंग्यात्मक और कथा-सन्दर्भ के अनुसार किया है—वह जो भरत के लिए राज्य चाहती है। इस समय कैकेयी का राजा को छूना दशरथ के क्रोध को भड़काने वाला सिद्ध होगा, जो अगले श्लोकों में स्पष्ट होता है। यह दृश्य एक शांत तूफान से पहले की स्थिति है।
