कदा प्राणि सहस्राणि राज मार्गे मम आत्मजौ ।
लाजैः अवकरिष्यन्ति प्रविशन्ताव् अरिम् दमौ ॥२-४३-१३॥
kadā prāṇi sahasrāṇi rāja mārge mama ātmajau |
lājaiḥ avakariṣyanti praviśantāv arim damau ॥2-43-13॥
Translation
When will thousands of people shower my two sons, the tamers of enemies, with popped rice (laja) on the royal highway as they enter the city?

कब हजारों लोग राजमार्ग पर प्रवेश करते हुए मेरे दोनों शत्रुदमन पुत्रों पर लाजों (खीलों) की वर्षा करेंगे?
English Commentary
Scattering laja (popped rice) is a traditional Indian ritual for welcoming heroes and newlyweds, signifying auspiciousness and prosperity. Kausalya longs for the day when the current sorrowful exit is replaced by a celebratory entrance. Addressing her sons as arim damau (subduers of enemies) suggests her hope that they will conquer whatever obstacles (or enemies like Ravana, though unknown to her yet) lie in the forest and return victorious. It is a visualization of public validation and festive joy.

'लाज' (धान की खील) की वर्षा करना स्वागत और मंगलकामना का मांगलिक कृत्य है। कौसल्या स्वप्न देख रही हैं कि वनवास पूर्ण होने पर राम और लक्ष्मण ('अरिज् दमौ' - शत्रुओं का दमन करने वाले) का विजय जुलूस निकलेगा। 'प्राणि सहस्राणि' (हजारों प्राणी) जनसमूह के उत्साह को दिखाता है। वर्तमान में जो जनता आंसुओं की वर्षा कर रही है, कौसल्या पूछती हैं कि वे कब खुशी से लाजों की वर्षा करेंगे। यह भविष्य के राज्याभिषेक या गृह-प्रवेश का दृश्य है।
