Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
निह्सम्शयम् मया मन्ये पुरा वीर कदर्यया ।
पातु कामेषु वत्सेषु मातृऋणाम् शातिताः स्तनाः ॥२-४३-१७॥
niḥsaṃśayam mayā manye purā vīra kadaryayā । pātu kāmeṣu vatsṣu mātṛṇām śātitāḥ stanāḥ ॥2-43-17॥
Translation
O hero (Dasharatha), I have no doubt that, driven by stinginess (intentionally) in a former time, I must have severed the udders of the mothers of calves that desired to drink milk.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वीर (दशरथ), मुझे इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि पूर्व काल में मैंने कृपणतापूर्वक (जानबूझकर) दूध पीने की इच्छा रखने वाले बछड़ों के लिए उनकी माताओं के स्तनों (को दूध से) काट दिया होगा।
English Commentary
This verse showcases Kausalya's deep self-reproach and her strong belief in the doctrine of Karma. The use of the word 'stinginess' (kadaryayā) implies the act was committed out of malice, not necessity. Depriving a calf of its mother's milk is considered a great sin, as it steals the source of life. Kausalya believes that the consequence of this grave sin is now manifesting as the separation from her son Rama, which is tantamount to being separated from her source of life. This demonstrates the intensity of her suffering, where she suspects her past-life sins are the cause of her current tragedy.

यह श्लोक कौसल्या के गहरे आत्म-आरोप और कर्म सिद्धांत में उनके विश्वास को दर्शाता है। 'कृपणतापूर्वक' (kadaryayā) शब्द का प्रयोग दर्शाता है कि यह कार्य किसी आवश्यकता के कारण नहीं, बल्कि दुर्भावना से किया गया था। गाय के दूध से बछड़े को वंचित करना सबसे बड़ा पाप माना जाता है क्योंकि यह जीवन के स्रोत को छीन लेता है। कौसल्या का मानना है कि इस घोर पाप का फल उन्हें अपने ही पुत्र राम के वियोग के रूप में मिल रहा है, जो उनके लिए जीवन के स्रोत से अलग होने के समान है। यह उनकी तीव्र पीड़ा को दर्शाता है, जहाँ वह अपनी वर्तमान त्रासदी का कारण बनने के लिए अपने पूर्व जन्म के पापों पर संदेह करती हैं।
