न हि तावद् गुणैः जुष्टम् सर्व शास्त्र विशारदम् ।
एक पुत्रा विना पुत्रम् अहम् जीवितुम् उत्सहे ॥२-४३-१९॥
na hi tāvad guṇaiḥ juṣṭam sarva śāstra viśāradam । eka putrā vinā putram aham jīvitum utsahe ॥2-43-19॥
Translation
Indeed, I have no desire to live without my son, who is endowed with virtues, proficient in all scriptures, and who is my only son.

गुणों से युक्त, सभी शास्त्रों के ज्ञान में निपुण, अपने एकमात्र पुत्र के बिना, मैं (एकलौती माँ) जीवित रहने का उत्साह नहीं रखती हूँ।
English Commentary
This verse is a powerful combination of Kausalya's despair and her eulogy of Rama's qualities. She views Rama not just as a son, but as one 'endowed with virtues' (guṇaiḥ juṣṭam) and 'proficient in all scriptures' (sarva śāstra viśāradam), highlighting his exceptional worth. Crucially, she refers to herself as eka putrā (the mother of an only son), making this separation equivalent to losing the sole foundation of her life.
