ते रत्न हीनाः तरुणाः फल काले विवासिताः ।
कथम् वत्स्यन्ति कृपणाः फल मूलैः कृत अशनाः ॥२-४३-८॥
te ratna hīnāḥ taruṇāḥ phala kāle vivāsitāḥ |
katham vatsyanti kṛpaṇāḥ phala mūlaiḥ kṛta aśanāḥ ॥2-43-8॥
Translation
Deprived of jewels and exiled in the prime of their youth—the time of enjoyment—how will they survive miserably, subsisting only on fruits and roots?

वे तरुण (युवा), जो जीवन का आनंद लेने (फल) के समय में निर्वासित कर दिए गए हैं और रत्नों से हीन हैं, वे दीन-हीन होकर कंद-मूल खाकर कैसे जीवित रहेंगे?
English Commentary
The phrase phala kāle (at the time of fruit/reward) is poignant; it refers to their youth, a time meant for enjoying the pleasures of life and royal status. Instead, they are vivāsitāḥ (exiled). Kausalya laments their transition from being adorned with gems (ratna hīnāḥ) to a wretched state (kṛpaṇāḥ). The concern about diet—subsisting on roots and fruits—is a typical maternal worry, grounding the high tragedy in the basic physical hardships her children must endure.

यहाँ 'फल काले' का अर्थ 'युवावस्था' या 'भोग का समय' है। जब उन्हें जीवन के सुख भोगने चाहिए थे, तब उन्हें तपस्वी बना दिया गया। 'रत्न हीनाः' का अर्थ केवल आभूषणों का अभाव नहीं, बल्कि राजसी संसाधनों का अभाव है। 'कृपणाः' (दीन/बेचारे) शब्द उनके वर्तमान अभावग्रस्त जीवन को दर्शाता है। एक माँ के लिए अपने बच्चों को 'फल मूलैः कृत अशनाः' (फल-मूल पर आश्रित) देखना असहनीय है। यह श्लोक राजसी भोजन और वन के भोजन के विरोधाभास के माध्यम से उनके कष्ट का वर्णन करता है।
