निशम्य तल् लक्ष्मण मातृ वाक्यम् ।
रामस्य मातुर् नर देव पत्न्याः ।
सद्यः शरीरे विननाश शोकः ।
शरद् गतः मेघैव अल्प तोयः ॥२-४४-३१॥
niśamya tal lakṣmaṇa mātru vākyam |
rāmasya mātur nara deva patnyāḥ |
sadyaḥ śarīre vinanāśa śokaḥ |
śarad gataḥ meghaiva alpa toyaḥ ॥2-44-31॥
Translation
Hearing those words of Lakṣmaṇa's mother (Sumitrā), the grief immediately vanished from the body of Rāma's mother, the wife of the king, just as a cloud with little water disappears in the autumn season.

लक्ष्मण की माता (सुमित्रा) के उन वाक्यों को सुनकर, राजा की पत्नी और राम की माता कौसल्या के शरीर से शोक तुरंत नष्ट हो गया, जैसे शरद ऋतु में थोड़ा जल वाला बादल (नष्ट हो जाता है)।
English Commentary
This is the concluding verse of Chapter 44 and describes the powerful effect of Sumitrā's counsel. Kauśalyā's grief vanished immediately. This transformation is illustrated with a beautiful simile: 'like a cloud with little water that disappears in the autumn season.' Just as an autumn cloud disperses without substance, Kauśalyā's sorrow, being insubstantial, immediately scattered. This simile suggests that her grief, though intense, was baseless because she had forgotten Rāma's commitment to Dharma and his power to conquer. Sumitrā's arguments dispelled that baselessness.

यह श्लोक अध्याय ४४ का अंतिम श्लोक है और सुमित्रा के उपदेश के प्रभाव को बताता है। कौसल्या का शोक तत्काल दूर हो गया। इस परिवर्तन को एक सुंदर उपमा द्वारा समझाया गया है: 'शरद ऋतु में थोड़ा जल वाला बादल' (शरद् गतः मेघैव अल्प तोयः)। शरद ऋतु का बादल पानी रहित होकर बिखर जाता है, उसी प्रकार कौसल्या का दुःख भी सारहीन होकर तुरंत बिखर गया। यह उपमा दर्शाती है कि उनका शोक यद्यपि तीव्र था, पर आधारहीन था, क्योंकि वह राम की धर्मनिष्ठा और विजय की शक्ति को भूल गई थीं। सुमित्रा के तर्कों ने उस आधारहीनता को दूर कर दिया।
