वर्तते च उत्तमाम् वृत्तिम् लक्ष्मणो अस्मिन् सदा अनघः ।
दयावान् सर्व भूतेषु लाभः तस्य महात्मनः ॥२-४४-५॥
vartate ca uttamām vṛttim lakṣmaṇo asmin sadā anaghaḥ । dayāvān sarva bhūteṣu lābhaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ ॥2-44-5॥
Translation
The sinless Lakshmana is always conducting himself with the highest excellence towards him (Rama), showing compassion to all beings. This is a great gain for that great soul (Lakshmana).

निष्पाप लक्ष्मण भी हमेशा उसमें (राम में) उत्तम वृत्ति का आचरण कर रहा है, जो सभी प्राणियों पर दयालु है। यह उस महात्मा (लक्ष्मण) का लाभ है।
English Commentary
Sumitra now introduces the example of Lakshmana, whose sacrifice further glorifies Rama's. Lakshmana is described as 'sinless' (anaghaḥ) and conducting himself with 'highest excellence' (uttamām vṛttim), meaning his unwavering service and devotion to Rama. The mention of him 'showing compassion to all beings' (dayāvān sarva bhūteṣu) highlights his nobility and spirit of sacrifice. Sumitra argues that serving Rama is a 'great gain' (lābhaḥ) for Lakshmana, affording him supreme religious merit. This offers Kausalya the solace that Rama is not alone, has a noble companion, and that Lakshmana, too, is achieving spiritual well-being through this act of dharma.
