Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
बाष्पेण पिहितम् दीनम् रामः सौमित्रिणा सह ।
चकर्ष इव गुणैः बद्ध्वा जनम् पुनर् इव आसनम् ॥२-४५-१२॥
bāṣpeṇa pihitam dīnam rāmaḥ saumitriṇā saha |
cakarṣa iva guṇaiḥ baddhvā janam punar iva āsanam ॥2-45-12॥
Translation
Rāma, along with Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), drew the people, who were covered by tears and distressed, as if binding them with his virtues, back towards the throne.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आँसुओं से ढकी हुई और दीन (दुखी) प्रजा को, राम ने लक्ष्मण के साथ, अपने गुणों से बाँधकर, मानो पुनः सिंहासन की ओर खींच लिया।
English Commentary
This verse describes the amazing power of Rāma's 'virtues.' Although Rāma was physically moving towards the forest in his chariot, his virtues were 'drawing him back towards the throne' (cakarṣa iva), because the people's love and respect would not let him go. The phrase 'binding them with his virtues' (guṇaiḥ baddhvā) is highly significant. It shows that Rāma's appeal stemmed not from force or command, but from the greatness of his character. This was a silent revolt of the populace, manifested through their grief and affection.

इस श्लोक में राम के 'गुणों' की अद्भुत शक्ति का वर्णन किया गया है। यद्यपि राम शारीरिक रूप से रथ पर वन की ओर जा रहे थे, लेकिन उनके गुण उन्हें वापस 'सिंहासन की ओर खींच रहे थे' (cakarṣa iva), क्योंकि प्रजा का प्रेम और सम्मान उन्हें जाने नहीं दे रहा था। यहाँ 'गुणों से बाँधकर' (guṇaiḥ baddhvā) का प्रयोग अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण है। यह दर्शाता है कि राम का आकर्षण किसी बल या आदेश से नहीं, बल्कि उनके चरित्र की महानता से उत्पन्न हुआ था। यह प्रजा का मौन विद्रोह था, जो उनके दुःख और स्नेह के रूप में प्रकट हुआ।
