Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् आर्त प्रलापाम्स् तान् वृद्धान् प्रलपतः द्विजान् ।
अवेक्ष्य सहसा रामः रथात् अवततार ह ॥२-४५-१७॥
evam ārta pralāpāms tān vṛddhān pralamatḥ dvijān |
avekṣya sahasā rāmaḥ rathāt avatatāra ha ॥2-45-17॥
Translation
Seeing those old Brahmins lamenting with such distressed cries, Rāma immediately descended from the chariot.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इस प्रकार दुःखी होकर विलाप करते हुए उन वृद्ध ब्राह्मणों को देखकर, राम सहसा रथ से उतर पड़े।
English Commentary
This verse highlights Rāma's sensitivity and his respect for the elders. Rāma knew that going into exile was his unyielding Dharma, but he could not bear the 'distressed cries' (ārta pralāpāms) of his dear ones, especially the old and revered Brahmins (dvijān). Their emotional appeal directed at the horses moved Rāma so much that he chose to break the norm of his journey and immediately 'descend from the chariot' (rathāt avatatāra). It is a mark of his greatness that he maintained a balance between his devotion to duty and his compassion for his devotees.

यह श्लोक राम की संवेदनशीलता और उनके सम्मान को दर्शाता है। राम जानते थे कि वनवास जाना उनका अटल धर्म है, लेकिन वह अपने प्रियजनों, विशेषकर वृद्ध और पूजनीय ब्राह्मणों (dvijān) के 'दुःखी विलाप' (ārta pralāpāms) को सहन नहीं कर सके। घोड़ों के प्रति की गई उनकी भावुक अपील ने राम के हृदय को इतना द्रवित कर दिया कि उन्होंने अपने यात्रा के नियम को तोड़कर तुरंत 'रथ से उतरना' (rathāt avatatāra) उचित समझा। यह उनकी महानता है कि उन्होंने अपनी कर्तव्यनिष्ठा और अपने भक्तों के प्रति करुणा के बीच संतुलन बनाए रखा।
