द्विजातीम्स् तु पदातीम्स् तान् रामः चारित्र वत्सलः ।
न शशाक घृणा चक्षुः परिमोक्तुम् रथेन सः ॥२-४५-१९॥
dvijātīms tu padātīms tān rāmaḥ cāritra vatsalaḥ |
na śaśāka ghṛṇā cakṣuḥ parimoktum rathena saḥ ॥2-45-19॥
Translation
Rāma, who loved virtue (righteousness), could not abandon those walking Brahmins by chariot, with a look of compassion (pity).

अपने चरित्र से प्रेम रखने वाले (धर्मनिष्ठ) राम, उन पैदल चलते हुए ब्राह्मणों को घृणा (दया) भरी दृष्टि से रथ द्वारा त्याग नहीं सके।
English Commentary
This verse further clarifies the reason for Rāma's descent from the chariot. Rāma was 'cāritra vatsalaḥ' (one who loved virtue), meaning he was extremely strict in upholding Dharma. It was against his Dharma to ride in the chariot while the revered old Brahmins walked 'on foot' (padātīms). The use of 'ghṛṇā cakṣuḥ' (a look of compassion) reveals Rāma's deep pity. He could not abandon the Brahmins due to their painful love, so he chose to abandon the chariot. This was his act of self-control, through which he balanced his duty and his courtesy.

यह श्लोक राम के रथ से उतरने के कारण को और स्पष्ट करता है। राम 'चारित्र वत्सलः' (अपने चरित्र से प्रेम रखने वाले) थे, जिसका अर्थ है कि वे धर्म के पालन में अत्यंत कठोर थे। उनके लिए यह धर्म-विरुद्ध था कि वे स्वयं तो रथ पर चलें और पूजनीय वृद्ध ब्राह्मण 'पैदल' (padātīms) चलें। 'घृणा चक्षुः' (दया भरी दृष्टि) का प्रयोग राम की गहरी करुणा को दर्शाता है। वे ब्राह्मणों को उनके कष्टदायक प्रेम के कारण त्याग नहीं सके, इसलिए उन्होंने रथ का त्याग करना उचित समझा। यह उनका आत्म-नियंत्रण था, जिसके माध्यम से उन्होंने अपने कर्तव्य और शिष्टाचार के बीच संतुलन स्थापित किया।
