Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गच्चन्तम् एव तम् दृष्ट्वा रामम् सम्भ्रान्त मानसाः ।
ऊचुः परम सम्तप्ता रामम् वाक्यम् इदम् द्विजाः ॥२-४५-२०॥
gacchantam eva tam dṛṣṭvā rāmam sambhrānta mānasāḥ |
ūcuḥ parama samtaptā rāmam vākyam idam dvijāḥ ॥2-45-20॥
Translation
Seeing Rāma thus walking on foot, those Brahmins, whose minds were highly agitated, spoke these words to Rāma with extreme grief.

राम को इस प्रकार पैदल ही जाते देखकर, वे ब्राह्मण (द्विज) जिनका मन व्याकुल हो चुका था, परम संतप्त होकर राम से ये वचन बोले।
English Commentary
Despite Rāma walking on foot, the Brahmins' sorrow did not diminish. The terms 'sambhrānta mānasāḥ' (highly agitated minds) and 'parama samtaptāḥ' (extreme grief) indicate the peak of their mental and emotional distress. While seeing Rāma on the chariot was insulting to them, seeing him walk on foot also pained them. This verse indicates that the Brahmins could not rise above their personal suffering due to their immense love for Rāma, and thus they made their final and most religious appeal.

राम के पैदल चलने के बावजूद, ब्राह्मणों का दुःख कम नहीं हुआ। 'सम्भ्रान्त मानसाः' (व्याकुल मन वाले) और 'परम संतप्ताः' (परम संतप्त) शब्द उनके मानसिक और भावनात्मक संकट की चरम स्थिति को दर्शाते हैं। राम को रथ पर देखना अपमानजनक था, पर उन्हें पैदल जाते देखना भी उन्हें कष्ट दे रहा था। इस श्लोक से पता चलता है कि ब्राह्मण राम के प्रति अपने अगाध प्रेम के कारण अपनी व्यक्तिगत पीड़ा से बाहर नहीं निकल पा रहे थे, और इसलिए उन्होंने अपनी अंतिम और सबसे धार्मिक अपील की।
