ब्राह्मण्यम् कृत्स्नम् एतत् त्वाम् ब्रह्मण्यम् अनुगच्छति ।
द्विज स्कन्ध अधिरूढाः त्वाम् अग्नयो अपि अनुयान्ति अमी ॥२-४५-२१॥
brāhmaṇyam kṛtsnam etat tvām brahmaṇyam anugacchati |
dvija skandha adhirūḍhāḥ tvām agnayo api anuyānti amī ॥2-45-21॥
Translation
This entire community of Brahmins, who respect you, is following you. Even these sacred fires (of the sacrificial rites), placed upon the shoulders of the Brahmins, are following you.

यह सम्पूर्ण ब्राह्मण समुदाय, जो आपका आदर करता है, वह आपके पीछे-पीछे आ रहा है। ये (यज्ञ के) अग्नि भी ब्राह्मणों के कंधों पर रखे हुए आपके पीछे आ रही हैं।
English Commentary
This verse is the climax of the Brahmins' appeal. They tell Rāma that he is being followed not just by individuals, but by Dharma itself. The fact that the 'entire community of Brahmins' (brāhmaṇyam kṛtsnam) is following him validates Rāma's adherence to Dharma. The greatest religious argument is that 'even the fires are following' (agnayo api anuyānti). These were the sacred sacrificial fires, whose upkeep is the supreme duty of every Brahmin. Carrying these fires on their shoulders into the forest was tantamount to abandoning their most sacred responsibility. They argue that if Rāma leaves, Dharma and sacrifices will cease in Ayodhyā, which is against Rāma's vow.

यह श्लोक ब्राह्मणों की अपील का चरमोत्कर्ष है। वे राम से कहते हैं कि वह केवल व्यक्तियों द्वारा नहीं, बल्कि साक्षात् धर्म द्वारा अनुगमित हैं। 'ब्राह्मण्यम् कृत्स्नम्' (सम्पूर्ण ब्राह्मण समुदाय) का आपके पीछे आना राम के धर्म के पालन को प्रमाणित करता है। सबसे बड़ा धार्मिक तर्क यह है कि 'अग्नयो अपि अनुयान्ति' (अग्नि भी पीछा कर रही है)। ये यज्ञ की पवित्र अग्नियाँ थीं, जिनका पालन प्रत्येक ब्राह्मण का सर्वोच्च कर्तव्य होता है। इन अग्नियों को कंधों पर रखकर जंगल में ले जाना, ब्राह्मणों के लिए अपनी सबसे पवित्र जिम्मेदारी का त्याग करने जैसा था। वे राम से कहते हैं कि यदि आप जाएंगे तो अयोध्या से धर्म और यज्ञ समाप्त हो जाएंगे, और यह राम की प्रतिज्ञा के विरुद्ध है।
