Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनवाप्त आतपत्रस्य रश्मि सम्तापितस्य ते ।
एभिः चायाम् करिष्यामः स्वैः चत्रैः वाजपेयिकैः ॥ ॥२-४५-२३॥
Anavāpta ātapatrasya raśmi samtāpitasya te । Ebhiḥ cāyām kariṣyāmaḥ svaiḥ chatraiḥ vājapeyakaiḥ ॥ ॥2-45-23॥
Translation
(O Rama!) You currently lack the royal umbrella and are scorched by the sun's rays. We shall provide shade for you with these umbrellas of ours, obtained through the performance of Vajapeya sacrifices.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(हे राम!) आपके पास इस समय राजछत्र नहीं है और आप धूप से संतप्त हो रहे हैं। हम अपने इन वाजपेय यज्ञ में प्राप्त छत्रों से आपके लिए छाया करेंगे।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the profound devotion and self-sacrifice of the Brahmins. The umbrella obtained after performing the Vajapeya sacrifice is not merely a tool for shade but a symbol of high spiritual and social status. By offering these sacred umbrellas to shield Rama from the sun, the Brahmins signify that they value Rama's comfort above their own hard-earned religious prestige. It is a poignant moment where the priestly class, usually the recipients of honor, seeks to serve the exiled prince using the symbols of their own merit. It underscores the idea that serving the embodiment of Dharma (Rama) is higher than the symbols of Dharma itself.
