Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अयोध्या निलयानाम् हि पुरुषाणाम् महा यशाः ।
बभूव गुण सम्पन्नः पूर्ण चन्द्रैव प्रियः ॥२-४५-३॥
ayodhyā nilayānām hi puruṣāṇām mahā yaśāḥ |
babhūva guṇa sampannaḥ pūrṇa candraiva priyaḥ ॥2-45-3॥
Translation
Indeed, the highly famous Rāma, who was endowed with virtues, was as dear to the men residing in Ayodhyā as the full moon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वास्तव में, महायशस्वी राम, जो गुणों से सम्पन्न थे, अयोध्या निवासी पुरुषों के लिए वैसे ही प्रिय थे जैसे पूर्ण चंद्रमा।
English Commentary
This verse provides a beautiful illustration of Rāma's personality and popularity. The root of his popularity was his being 'endowed with virtues' (guṇa sampannaḥ). Rāma is compared to the 'full moon.' Just as the full moon grants coolness, peace, and joy to all, Rāma, too, was dear to the residents of Ayodhyā and provided solace to their hearts through his virtues and conduct. The mention of 'highly famous' (mahā yaśāḥ) proves that the basis of his fame was his character. This simile portrays Rāma's unblemished and universally beloved nature.

यह श्लोक राम के व्यक्तित्व और लोकप्रियता का एक सुंदर चित्रण प्रस्तुत करता है। उनकी लोकप्रियता का कारण उनका 'गुण सम्पन्न' होना था। राम की तुलना 'पूर्ण चंद्रमा' से की गई है। जैसे पूर्ण चंद्रमा सभी को शीतलता, शांति और आनंद प्रदान करता है, उसी प्रकार राम भी अपने गुणों और व्यवहार से अयोध्यावासियों को प्रिय थे और उनके हृदयों को शीतलता प्रदान करते थे। 'महायशस्वी' (highly famous) का उल्लेख उनकी प्रसिद्धि के आधार को सिद्ध करता है—उनका चरित्र। यह उपमा राम के निष्कलंक और सर्वप्रिय स्वभाव को दर्शाती है।
