अवेक्षमाणः सस्नेहम् चक्षुषा प्रपिबन्न् इव ।
उवाच रामः स्नेहेन ताः प्रजाः स्वाः प्रजाइव ॥२-४५-५॥
avekṣamāṇaḥ sasneham cakṣuṣā prapibann iva |
uvāca rāmaḥ snehena tāḥ prajāḥ svāḥ prajAiva ॥2-45-5॥
Translation
Looking at them with affection, as if he were drinking them up with his eyes, Rāma spoke to those subjects with love, as if they were his own children.

स्नेहपूर्वक देखते हुए और ऐसा प्रतीत होता था जैसे वे (अपनी) आँखों से उन प्रजाजनों को पी रहे हों, राम ने स्नेह के साथ उनसे ऐसे बात की, जैसे वे उनकी अपनी संतान हों।
English Commentary
This verse expresses Rāma's deep paternal affection for the subjects who were compelling him to stay. The idiom 'as if drinking them up with his eyes' (cakṣuṣā prapibann iva) illustrates the intensity of his love; like one who repeatedly looks at a very dear object and wishes to absorb it into their heart. Rāma spoke to them not like a king, but like a 'father,' 'as if they were his own children' (svāḥ prajāiva). This shows Rāma's unique spirit of governance, where the bond was one of love, not merely the force of authority. It also shows his compassion, as he was sacrificing their love for his duty.
