ततः तु तमसा तीरम् रम्यम् आश्रित्य राघवः ।
सीताम् उद्वीक्ष्य सौमित्रिम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-४६-१॥
Tataḥ tu tamasā tīram ramyam āśritya rāghavaḥ । Sītām udvīkṣya saumitrim idam vacanam abravīt ॥ ॥2-46-1॥
Translation
Then, taking shelter on the beautiful banks of the Tamasa, Raghava looked at Sita and spoke these words to the son of Sumitra (Lakshmana).
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनंतर तमसा नदी के रमणीय तट का आश्रय लेकर, राघव (राम) ने सीता की ओर देखकर सुमित्रानंदन (लक्ष्मण) से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse opens the 46th Sarga and sets the scene for the first night of exile. Despite the tragic circumstances, the bank of the Tamasa is described as ramyam (delightful/beautiful), reflecting Rama's calm composure and ability to appreciate nature even in adversity. His glance at Sita signifies his protective concern for her as she faces the wilderness for the first time. Addressing Lakshmana marks the beginning of their new dynamic: brothers in arms against the wild, separated from the comforts and crowds of the capital.

यह श्लोक अयोध्या काण्ड के ४६वें सर्ग का आरम्भ है। यहाँ 'रम्यम्' (सुंदर) विशेषण महत्वपूर्ण है। यद्यपि परिस्थिति दुखद है, राम की दृष्टि सौंदर्यबोध नहीं खोती; वे प्रकृति की सुंदरता को अब भी देख पा रहे हैं। सीता की ओर देखना उनकी चिंता और प्रेम को दर्शाता है—यह सीता का वन में पहला अनुभव है। लक्ष्मण को संबोधित करना यह बताता है कि अब लक्ष्मण ही उनके एकमात्र सहायक और प्रहरी हैं। यह वनवास की पहली रात्रि का आरंभ है, जहाँ राम अब नागरिक कोलाहल से दूर शांति में स्थिति का आकलन कर रहे हैं।
