इयम् अद्य निशा पूर्वा सौमित्रे प्रस्थिता वनम् ।
वन वासस्य भद्रम् ते स न उत्कण्ठितुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥२-४६-२॥
Iyam adya niśā pūrvā saumitre prasthitā vanam । Vana vāsasya bhadram te sa na utkaṇṭhitum arhasi ॥ ॥2-46-2॥
Translation
O Son of Sumitra! This is the first night of our journey into the forest. May prosperity be with you! You must not be anxious (or pine for home).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सुमित्रानन्दन! वनवास की यह पहली रात्रि उपस्थित हुई है। तुम्हारा कल्याण हो! तुम्हें (घर की याद करके) उत्कण्ठित (व्याकुल) नहीं होना चाहिए।
English Commentary
Rama assumes the role of a protective elder brother and leader here. The first night of exile is psychologically the most taxing, as the stark contrast between royal luxury and the wilderness becomes reality. By blessing Lakshmana ("May prosperity be with you") and addressing him gently, Rama tries to steel Lakshmana's resolve. He advises against utkantha (longing or anxiety), urging Lakshmana to accept the present moment without looking back at what was left behind, marking the definitive transition from princes to forest-dwellers.

राम यहाँ एक बड़े भाई और नेता की भूमिका निभा रहे हैं। वनवास की पहली रात सबसे कठिन होती है क्योंकि राजमहलों के सुख और वन के कष्टों का अंतर इसी क्षण स्पष्ट होता है। राम लक्ष्मण को 'सौमित्रे' कह कर संबोधित करते हैं और 'भद्रम् ते' (तुम्हारा कल्याण हो) कहकर उन्हें आशीर्वाद देते हैं। राम जानते हैं कि लक्ष्मण ने आवेश और प्रेम में घर छोड़ा है, लेकिन अब वास्तविकता सामने है। इसलिए वे लक्ष्मण को ढाढस बंधाते हैं कि वे पुरानी यादों में डूबकर दुखी न हों, बल्कि साहस के साथ इस नई परिस्थिति को स्वीकार करें।
