Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अस्मद् व्यपेक्षान् सौमित्रे निरपेक्षान् गृहेष्व् अपि ।
वृक्ष मूलेषु सम्सुप्तान् पश्य लक्ष्मण साम्प्रतम् ॥ ॥२-४६-१९॥
Asmad vyapekṣān saumitre nirapekṣān gṛheṣv api । Vṛkṣa mūleṣu samsuptān paśya lakṣmaṇa sāmpratam ॥ ॥2-46-19॥
Translation
O Son of Sumitra! Behold these citizens now, who, out of longing for us and disregarding their own homes, are sleeping at the roots of trees.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सुमित्रानन्दन! देखो, ये लोग हमारे प्रति स्नेह (अपेक्षा) के कारण अपने घरों की भी परवाह न करके, इस समय वृक्षों की जड़ों में सो रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Rama points out the immense sacrifice of the citizens. Driven by vyapekṣān (attachment/longing) for Rama, they have become nirapekṣān (indifferent) to their own comfortable homes. Sleeping at the roots of trees highlights their determination and the hardships they are willing to endure. Rama draws Lakshmana's attention to this to emphasize that allowing them to follow further would only increase their suffering.

राम नागरिकों के त्याग को रेखांकित कर रहे हैं। 'निरपेक्षान् गृहेष्व् अपि'—उन्हें अपने सुखद घरों की कोई चिंता नहीं है। वे केवल राम को चाहते हैं। वृक्ष की जड़ों पर सोना अत्यंत कष्टदायक होता है, फिर भी राम-प्रेम में उन्हें यह स्वीकार्य है। राम लक्ष्मण को यह दृश्य इसलिए दिखा रहे हैं ताकि वे समझ सकें कि इन लोगों का प्रेम कितना गहरा है, और क्यों इनसे चुपके से अलग होना इनके ही हित में है।
