यथा एते नियमम् पौराः कुर्वन्ति अस्मन् निवर्तने ।
अपि प्राणान् असिष्यन्ति न तु त्यक्ष्यन्ति निश्चयम् ॥ ॥२-४६-२०॥
Yathā ete niyamam paurāḥ kurvanti asman nivartane । Api prāṇān asiṣyanti na tu tyakṣyanti niścayam ॥ ॥2-46-20॥
Translation
Given the determination these citizens are showing to bring us back, it seems they would sooner give up their lives than abandon their resolve.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिस प्रकार ये नागरिक हमें लौटा ले जाने का आग्रह (नियम) कर रहे हैं, उससे लगता है कि ये अपने प्राण छोड़ देंगे, परन्तु अपना निश्चय नहीं छोड़ेंगे।
English Commentary
Rama assesses the resolve of the crowd. He realizes that their insistence (niyamam) on taking him back is absolute. They are ready to sacrifice their lives (prāṇān asiṣyanti) rather than let him go to the forest. This realization is crucial; it justifies his decision to slip away. He understands that a direct confrontation or plea will not work against such emotional stubbornness, and staying would only endanger them.
हिंदी टीका
राम स्थिति की गंभीरता को भाँप लेते हैं। यह केवल भीड़ नहीं, यह एक भावनात्मक सत्याग्रह है। राम जानते हैं कि यदि वे जगे हुए नागरिकों से बात करेंगे, तो नागरिक नहीं मानेंगे और शायद अपने प्राणों की बाजी लगा देंगे। 'नियमम्' शब्द यहाँ उनके दृढ़ संकल्प को दर्शाता है। राम नहीं चाहते कि उनकी वजह से किसी भी नागरिक को क्षति पहुंचे। इसलिए, छिपकर जाना कायरता नहीं, बल्कि करुणा है।
