Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अतः भूयो अपि न इदानीम् इक्ष्वाकु पुर वासिनः ।
स्वपेयुर् अनुरक्ता माम् वृक्ष मूलानि सम्श्रिताः ॥ ॥२-४६-२२॥
Ataḥ bhūyo api na idānīm ikṣvāku pura vāsinaḥ । Svapeyur anuraktā mām vṛkṣa mūlāni samśritāḥ ॥ ॥2-46-22॥
Translation
So that the residents of the city of Ikshvaku, who are devoted to me, may not again have to sleep taking shelter at the roots of trees.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिससे कि मेरे प्रति अनुराग रखने वाले ये अयोध्यावासी (इक्ष्वाकुपुर-वासी) फिर इस तरह वृक्षों की जड़ों का आश्रय लेकर न सोएं (अर्थात उन्हें और कष्ट न हो)।
English Commentary
This verse clarifies Rama's motive. It is purely altruistic. He wants to prevent the citizens from enduring further hardships of the forest life, like sleeping under trees. He knows that as long as he is within reach, they will follow him. By disappearing, he forces them to return to the comfort of their homes in Ayodhya. It is an act of "tough love"—breaking their hearts now to ensure their physical well-being.
हिंदी टीका
राम के चुपके से जाने का असली कारण यहाँ स्पष्ट होता है। वे अपने लिए नहीं, बल्कि नागरिकों के सुख के लिए भाग रहे हैं। यदि राम रुके रहे, तो नागरिक भी उनके पीछे-पीछे जंगल में भटकेंगे और पेड़ों के नीचे सोएंगे। राम यह देख नहीं सकते। वे चाहते हैं कि उनके जाने के बाद नागरिक निराश होकर ही सही, पर अपने सुरक्षित घरों में लौट जाएं। यह 'परहित' के लिए 'आत्म-अपयश' (चोरी-छिपे भागने का अपयश) लेने जैसा है।
